A fishway study has been carried out using a mathematical three-dimensional SPH model in order to optimize the hydraulic design. It has been found that it reproduces the hydrodynamic flow on the fishway satisfactorily. An instability on flow that tends to oscillate, in the xy plane, along the vertical slot has been observed. Also, there is a lateral recirculation of the flow in the modules of the fishway, which is larger in upper layers and much lower in the bottom.

SPH model is a very useful tool and complementary to the physical modelling an valuable information has been gained in order to understand fishes behavior in each area. Such behaviors are linked to the hydraulic variables fields that can be analyzed rapidly with model SPH.
